Building Seaside

When Robert Davis set out to build the town of Seaside in 1981 his goal was to create an idyllic town built on a human scale, where the pace was slow and relaxing; the perfect spot for a vacation. In order to achieve this, Seaside would need to grow slowly, one street at a time, within a building code that sought to address the social and economic concerns of the early 1980s. Using the neighboring Florida vernacular as the starting point for his code, Davis envisioned a network of houses that would fit seamlessly into the neighboring communities, while also creating its own visual autonomy.

Unlike the later New Urbanist communities that have followed it, Seaside uses multiple architects and styles. The result is an architectural masterpiece. Some of the most important architects and firms from the past 30 years, from the traditionally inspired early town architects to the current modernists, are represented in Seaside. The list that follows attempts to show all of the architects who have built in Seaside and the properties they have created. Just as the town of Seaside is a work in progress, this list will continue to grow as more architects join the Seaside Research Portal.
